My Published Work

This guide is considerably longer than my 2 other pocket guides published by Pequot Press. The best part about writing this book was hiking 40 trails in Massachusetts towns that I otherwise may have never visited.
First there is Boston, a world class city literally studded with historical landmarks like the Freedom Trail, Bunker Hill, and Faneul Hall, but the metropolitan area as well as all of eastern Massachusetts is not only peppered with obvious monuments to the past but less apparent treasures lay just around the corner where you least expect them. As you embark on the hikes contained within these chapters, you’ll get up close and personal with must-see destinations like Walden Pond, where Henry Thoreau popularized rugged individualism as a defining American attribute; Minute Man National Historic Park’s Battle Road, where the original road bed used by advancing redcoats and Paul Revere’s freedom riders is still intact and open for exploration; and the Blackstone Canal River Valley Heritage Corridor; a dynamic symbol of the Industrial Revolution’s dawning where the remarkably straight cut stone blocks lining the canal’s locks sit just as solidly as the day they were placed there by horse and back breaking manual labor.

This small pocket guide contains twenty day hikes ranging in length from 1 to 5 miles covering the diverse landscape within the small State of Rhode Island. No longer than an hour’s drive from South County to the eastern shore of the Sakonnet River to the vast Arcadia Preserve near the western border, Rhode Island terrain represents an easy-to-reach microcosm of all that outdoor Southern New England has to offer. I discovered that some trails are well marked and heavily used while others are so difficult to locate, that only a local guide or these chapters will get you there. Beaches and marshes, rock encrusted mountainsides, as well as easygoing wood road are all covered here. Whether you want to simply beach comb for a couple hours, enjoy lakeside vistas from beneath a canopy of cedars, or do some ridge walking for panoramic views, Best Easy Day Hikes of Rhode Island covers the best places to escape civilization for awhile while still only less than an hour’s drive from Providence’s vibrant urban scene. And being the Ocean State, salty air and deep blue coastline are experienced firsthand on some routes while simply palpable on the rest.
