You’re in your flip flops, sand is in your hair from that final body surf into shore, and your suit is still wet. The last place you want to go for a bite to eat is into a heavily air conditioned tomb or dress-code enforced eatery. You need good food where you can still hear the seagulls while kicking back outside on an unfussy patio. Take the A train all the way over Jamaica Bay to Rockaway Beach at 96th St.. If you’re a child of the seventies or any generation punk fan, you just can’t help humming a certain tune by the Ramones upon arrival. Rockaway Taco, a no-frills taco stand run by resident surf dog Andrew Field, may not be pretty to look at but the raw genuine scene is the perfect setting for handmade Mexican standbys.
Take your pick from tofu, beer battered tilapia, or chorizo tacos. Or order some chips and guacamole and watch Field cut up the corn tortillas and fry them before your eyes. He also whips up a mean guacamole daily, rips fresh plantains out of the skin only after you order and has an array of fresh squeezed fruit juices to properly quench your thirst. Best of all, all the offerings are simply scrawled out on a whiteboard so there aren’t any menus to mess up and ponder over.
Take A train (Far Rockaway A train) to Broad Channel (one stop past JFK airport). Wait on the same platform for S shuttle train and take that two stops to 98th street. Rockaway Taco is at 96th street and Rockaway Beach Blvd.
